FROM OUR PRESIDENT: |
September has come and gone. Our finest hour. Time to put your pumpkins on the porch and get ready for the holidays. It is also time to nominate new officers. Anyone with a hankering to be helpful, think about volunteering. Though it takes some effort to keep the wheels rolling, a lot of good comes of it. Sept. was a great month for playing music. Lois Liggett led a group of players at the Winfield Veterans Home on Sept 7th. I heard it went well and I'm not surprised. Lois always does a good job. I'm so glad that people can take time to play music for our veterans. The Winfield Warm Up Picnic on the 8th of Sept. was really great. Attendance at workshops and the concert was very good. Thanks to the workshop leaders for teaching and performing. What a wonderful gift. Thanks to Joe Anderson for contacting the WS leaders and arranging the schedule. I heard lots of good comments about the pot luck supper and can personally attest that there was great food available. Thanks to those who played for open mic. Joyce, Brett, Richard and I had a great time playing. Thanks to all who found or gave items for the raffle. I do think it really adds to the atmosphere of the event. The concert by the WS leaders was excellent. Some people were even moved to dance along with the music. It's so good to see that kind of participation. I am very grateful to all who helped me at my home, at Lonnies and who performed the many things at the event that make this such a special day for the club. I was very pleased with the coverage from the Winfield Daily Courier. You can see a video on the warm up picnic at www.winfieldcourier.com under local video. They also put a picture on the front page of the paper of a group of us performing at Maggies place on 12 Sept.. That play date was part of the Crawl (businesses inviting music groups to perform at their places the night before Walnut Valley Festival begins). Thanks to Cindy Cole for setting up this opportunity for us. We had a great time playing. The restaurant, Maggies Place, gave the players fettuccine Alfredo supper for our efforts. They also put out a tip jar in which we received $15.00 from the patrons that night. We are so glad that Matt Naas got to come back from California and join us for Walnut Valley. There was lots of good jamming at the campground. As usual, the festival was just outstanding with more good stuff than you can get around to see. There was also a picture of Matt in the paper during the festival. We had the opportunity to meet family and friends of club members at the campground. Such a privilege. It helps you know a person better when you know the ones they care about. Though it can rarely be said that the weather was too hot AND too cold for an event, I think "07 Walnut Valley qualifies. It was memorable in lots of ways. Brett and Cindy Cole were performing at a family wedding in Mo. the wk end of the 29th. I'm sorry no club members could accept your invitation to join in. I'm sure it was a fun and joyous occasion. On the 29th of Sept. a group of us played at the Faith Lutheran Church Fall Festival in Derby. There was a nice turn out of musicians and playing went well. I functioned as monitor with the Mandolin again. This works pretty well to keep us together in noisy or open places. Several of us stayed for lunch at the food tent in the parking lot. This event is in large part a big craft fair. The church members really go all out. It was fun to be part of it. There are several play opportunities coming up. Check the coming play dates part of the newsletter for more details. For the 7pm play date at my church. It is a one story white bldg. on the north side of 21st St. with the parking lot in front. It is 8000 w 21st St which is about half way between Ridge and Tyler. It is across from All Star Sports and has an electronic billboard in front with red writing. Hope lots of you can come. Thanks everyone for a great warm up picnic.

VICE PRESIDENTIAL CORNER: |
Two Cents Worth from your V. P. We had nearly excellent weather for the Walnut Valley Festival too. Wow! It was so great to see everyone there and such terrific music on the stages and in the campgrounds. New friends, old friends and friends all the way from CA. It's all about you and the MUSIC. How sweet it is to fall asleep listening to a bluegrass jam, a fiddle fest, clucking banjos and Carp Camp swinging and singing in through my tent flaps on all four sides. Man, I sure hope heaven is like that! The G.P.D. A. has opened a new world to me and I thank all of you for making this happen and I think it should be one of our goals to make this possible for all acoustic musicians down the road. Thanks again. Play date change: The Oct 16th date has been changed to the 23rd . See Playing Opportunities. Your V.P. |

Special Announcement

For sale: I am going to sell my 12 string mandola. It has 4 courses with 3 strings per course. It is tuned CGDA like a viola or tenor banjo. I bought it new from the luthier in Rockport, Maine in 1999. I have not played it much and it needs to be played. It also comes with a new gig bag. It has a beautiful sound. There are only three in existance that I know of. One went to a person in Italy, I have one, and Nick kept the third one. If you are interested or want to see/play it, please let me know. I will have it at Winfield in camp as well.
