November 2007

FROM OUR PRESIDENT:

From your pumpkin pickin'   Pres.

The nip of fall is in the air.  We've seen festivals a plenty.  The trick or treaters are satiated once more.  The leaves of the Virginia Creeper are unusually red this year. Music was very good in October.  On Oct. 6th we joined Lois Liggett to play at Cumbernauld in Winfield.  Lois, as usual, was very organized. She is such a great hostess.  The playing went very, very well.  Though our audience was large at times, we were in a quiet room where the delicacies of volume and harmony could really be appreciated. Lunch was provided and Lois had arranged for us to receive several gifts for our playing.  Gourmet fudge, a cook book and a "got music" car magnet were given to each player plus cookies of chocolate and coconut were made available in the lobby.  Afterwards, several of us got together at the local "College Hill" coffee house to enjoy tea and talk.  We concluded the afternoon with a spirited game of dominoes on the coffee house patio.  It was a beautiful fall day with perfect shirt sleeve weather.

On Oct. 12th it was my turn  to hostess as we played in Wichita at the church I attend, FMBC.Thanks to all who came to play.  It went very well, in large part due to Joe Anderson and his uncommon ability to put people at ease.  The Prime Timers (the group we were playing for) served great snacks of apple and Carmel dipping sauce along with other finger foods and hot spiced apple juice.  I have heard many positive comments at church about the performance. On Oct.23rd a group of us played for the annual Chicken Noodle Dinner at Faith Lutheran Church where Lonnie and Bruce Bonnes attend.  We were back ground music for the dinner. I enjoy this event a lot.  At times the crowd was boisterous and at times, especially later on , people sat and listened attentively to our playing.   Folks seemed to enjoy our music and indicated this in the very tasty  chicken noodle dinner they shared with us.  Thanks Lonnie and Bruce.

We also shared sadness when a small group of us played at the funeral of Carolyn June (Stidham) Scott, the daughter of Ken and Carolyn Stidham.  She died Oct 31st and the service was graveside at Clearwater cemetery on Nov 5th.  It was a blustery day.  Even though the sun shone on the bright green canvas shelter by the grave, it snapped and rumbled in the wind.  The shining blue casket, engraved with silver crosses and housing its precious contents, was nearly the only motionless object.  Our music was faint in volume  compared to the competing wind but was strong in spirit.   Most of us joined the family and other friends at the Viola Community Center.  A very nice lunch was provided by the church in the foyer of the renovated gymnasium (now community center).  It had the feel of a family dinner.  Our hearts go out to Ken and Carolyn and Family. I have been contacted by Maggie Nelson, Cindy Coles mom, about playing at the veterans home later this month.   I don't have a definite date now but will send it by e-mail as soon as I do. It's a pleasure.

Pat

VICE PRESIDENTIAL CORNER:

From the Cluttered Desk of Your V.P.

I can't believe it's November already. This time of year will soon be filled with all kinds of activities and many opportunities to play, play, play. I hope some of you will make time in your schedules for music and fellowship with many of your "noted" buddies. :-) We will be sending out e mail notices about upcoming Play Dates and events in December that you will not want to miss! November brings election of new officers so please try to be present at the next monthly meeting. We need your input, ideas and your volunteerism. That is this Saturday, the 10th! Also, please bring some ideas and some of your skills for Saturday workshops. I welcome some new or old ideas. Thank You. We would like to extend our heartfelt sorrow and many prayers to Ken and Carolyn Stidham in the untimely loss of their beloved daughter. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
That's all for now.

Your V.P.
Lonnie

GPDA Meeting Minutes for October

Pat H. opened the meeting.
Pat announced that we received a letter of thanks for playing for the Lamplighters.
Pat also announced that it is time for nominations for the Club Officers term of 2008. Pat asked the 2007 officers if they would be willing to serve a second term and all were willing to serve the 2008 term. Therefore, the current officers were nominated for the 2008 term and will be voted upon at the pleasure of the President and members in attendance at November 10 meeting.

Toni Warren introduced the idea of our club learning more Gospel Music. In particular, music that can be played and sung in similar venues such as our recent performance at First Mennonite Brethren Church. Whereas, many of our performances are background music for such celebrations as the recent Faith Lutheran church festival and chicken noodle supper, audiences such as First Mennonites and the Senior Nursing facilities some times just come to listen. Within this distinction, it was suggested that these purely "listening" audiences might like to join in for some sing-alongs.
Appropriately for sing-alongs, it has also been suggested that we could provide printed lyrics handouts A sample possibility is to print 8 1/2"x 11" sheets typed in Bold 16 point Times Roman font. Dwight and Rose have volunteered to help with this project.

Jim C. gave the Treasury report. All who participated seemed very pleased with the success of this year's Warm-Up Picnic. Jim announced that all figures were not in yet but the WUP "income" this year was not all that far behind the "expenses". The grand total treasury balance for the month was approximately $2,477.00.

October was a banner month for new members. We all welcome Candy and Joseph Costello, Trevor Hicks, Patricia Oplinger and son and Valerie Parker and son.
The business meeting was adjourned for workshops and the "play-around".

Special Announcement

For sale:

I am going to sell my 12 string mandola. It has 4 courses with 3 strings per course. It is tuned CGDA like a viola or tenor banjo. I bought it new from the luthier in Rockport, Maine in 1999. I have not played it much and it needs to be played. It also comes with a new gig bag. It has a beautiful sound. There are only three in existance that I know of. One went to a person in Italy, I have one, and Nick kept the third one. If you are interested or want to see/play it, please let me know. I will have it at Winfield in camp as well.
