June 2008

FROM OUR PRESIDENT:

From your praise pickin' Pres.

April showers bring May flowers and beautiful they were. Now, May is gone and with it the school year. The month of graduations and Mother's Day has flown by again. Now it is time to gear up for summer fun. Camp outs, little league games, gardening and vacations loom large for many of us. Music brings us the chance to play for the GS at Cowtown and, this year, also music camp. Winfield warm up picnic will be here before you know it. We have again been invited to play for the Crawl on 12 Sept. at Maggies place. This is the night before Walnut Valley Festival starts and Maggies place is an Italian restaurant in Winfield. We played there last year and it was lots of fun. It sort of gives you the feeling that you are part of the festival. Don't miss out on these great play opps and activities.

On the 20 th of May in the afternoon a group of us played for Cherry Creek Retirement Center at Pawnee and Rock in Wichita . We played in the dining hall to a nice sized audience. Playing went well. We played some from the usual play list. We then played a couple of hymns. Most of the rest of the performance time was spent with requests for hymns. Jim and Toni had brought the blue hymn books. This allowed for audience participation and this group really enjoyed participating. Thanks, Karen, from Cherry Creek Retirement Center . Karen attended our Spring Fun Raiser and this prompted the invitation to play.

On the 31 st of May a group of us played for a Hymn Sing at Sterling house Nursing Home in Derby . There was a good turn out of players. It is so nice to see some of our newer members joining us as we share the gift of music. The audience participated well and seemed very glad that we'd come. I am still adhering to the theory that less than perfection in our singing bolsters the confidence of the residents to sing. Perhaps rationalization has set in, but please don't burst my bubble. Thanks again to Toni and Jim Warren for setting up the play date and making and putting up posters in the nursing home to let the residents know about the event.

Our condolences to Michelle Yoder for the loss of her father, and to the Bonnes's for the loss of Alma .

Pat

Here's two cents worth from your V. P. :
From your V. P. :

Just a reminder: at our June 14th meeting Joyce Bloyer will be doing a workshop on finger picking for the mountain dulcimer.  So bring the appropriate instrument.  As usual we will be jamming after that.  Come and join in on the fun!

I also wanted to thank those who sent their condolences and who also attended the funeral service for our Mom, Alma in Derby on the 29th.  Thanks also to everyone who has played for her and others at Brookridge Plaza and at Lake Point care center in Rose Hill.  Those people always enjoy us when we come.  Keep on playing.  :-)
