February 2004

FROM OUR PRESIDENT:

Rain, Sleet or Snow ...no wait..that is the mailman's motto!!! Old Man Winter has put a halt or at least delayed some of the club's best made plans for the beginning of the year. But that's just it. It is only 'the beginning' and we have so much more planned that will carry us on into the seasons yet to come. Get those creative juices going while you're sitting around the warm fireplace and help us create a great Tee Shirt design for the Club. The deadline for designs will be February 14th. Bring any and all your ideas to the February meeting.

Remember also that the Iron Horse will be held in March. We need YOU to help to make it a success with all your talents put forth. Please be working on a song or two to add to the wonderful mix of the club. Don't be shy...Let Larry McDoniel know he can count on you to help. I read something about how silent the forest would be if only the best songbirds were only allowed to sing. Think about it and get busy with YOUR SONG. Remember the little candy conversation hearts so popular....the one that reads... YOU'RE SPECIAL...well it is TRUE. Happy Valentine's Day and see you on the 14 th !

Karen Stiner, GPDA President

VICE PRESIDENTIAL CORNER:

Watching the snow come down only reminds me that just yesterday the winter retreat was canceled. Disappointing at best, but better than someone being hurt on the slick streets. Sometime in Feb. would be a great time to have it anyway. Everyone stay posted, we will let you know when we have a new date.

For those that are interested, don't forget about the KBA winter bluegrass festival coming up the 13 th & 14 th of Feb. at the Marriott.

I'm looking for folks to volunteer to do workshops at the GPDA meetings. Don't make me call you!!!! Don't think that you have to be a master to lead a workshop - maybe just a lick or a trick that you learned from someone outside the club. Call or e-mail me at 620-488-3673 or jmanderson95 @earthlink.net

I'm excited about the chance to work more with Cowtown. Marie and I both hope to become more authentic in our attire in the future. Karen & Barb have been going to meetings so more info will be coming soon.

Stay warm, stay safe, and play music!

VP Joe Anderson

SECRETARY'S NOTES FROM JANUARY MEETING:

Karen called the meeting to order.

Karen asked if a member has a concern/play opportunity etc that it be submitted to the Board for discussion before being announced at a meeting. This will hopefully alleviate misunderstandings or conflicts of scheduling. www.gpda.org is the club web site.

The calendar is updated as information becomes available/helpful for scheduling attendance.

Proposed Handbook changes were read into the minutes and will be voted on by paid GPDA members at the Feb. meeting.

Submit your GPDA T- shirt designs to the Board.

Jan. financial report submitted by Treasurer Larry McDoniel, beginning balance - $2,139.

'04 club dues should be paid on/before Feb meeting if you want your info in the Handbook.

Submitted by Barbara Barr, GPDA secretary.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Iron Horse Benefit Concert Update:

Our annual fund raiser at the Iron Horse Concert Hall is fast approaching (March 13). The admission fee this year is $10 per person, which covers the concert and snacks. Children under the age of 19 attend free of charge if accompanied by their parents. We are needing volunteers to do event setup, work behind the counter taking admission fees, handle cleanup after the event, sign-up to bring snack and finger-foods, and of course....sign-ups for performing. We currently have 3 definite acts and 1 "maybe" on the playlist. We will discuss the event in detail at the next club meeting. You can e-mail me to sign-up for any of the needed functions, or if you have questions.

Larry

The Museum will be great place to meet and I thank Rhoda & Terri for letting us use this beautiful building. We'll be able to sneak a peak at the artwork during our breaks, too. And now another column from Lois Seiwert:

“MUSIC BITES”

Classical Guitar with the Wichita Guitar Society Feb. 21st, 2:00 p.m., Wichita Art Museum, (admission is free on Sat.) Mark Bentley & Jim Grimm from the Kansas City area where they are both active in teaching and performance. Both have toured nationally and Mr. Bentley currently has an instrument sales studio in Parkville, MO. There are additional Sat. Matinee performances scheduled for the spring months ahead. AND the first of the Sunday Jazz Matinee at the Museum Series, 2:00 p.m. also, is scheduled for Mar. 7th. Monty Muza and Richard Johnson are listed as performers.

If you are interested in helping to start an acoustic gathering at the Creations Restaurant in Mt. Vernon (just west of the West Entrance to Cheney Lake) call Steve Dunn at 540-0460 and talk to him about your ideas of how it could happen. He has a wonderful stage, is completing a sound system with monitors, and is really interested in making music happen in Mt. Vernon. So give Steve a call.
