The Official Newsletter of the Great Plains Dulcimer Alliance

Volume XXIII Number Four

April 2005

FROM OUR PRESIDENT:

Happy April Fool's.  If you are able to read this, I will assume that you haven't blown away.  Ya gotta love spring in Kansas.  Looking forward to the club meeting and the Quintin Stephens workshops/concert.  Remember, you are the best advertisement that money can buy, so invite everyone that you know that plays mountain dulcimer to the workshops and concert.  Look for all the info elsewhere in the newsletter.  (see above.)

I need for someone to volunteer to chair the Winfield Warm-Up Picnic.  Barbara has done the hard work, as she has most of the workshop leaders already lined up.  Of course, there will be lots of people to help you - we just need someone to coordinate things.
So - - Don't Be Shy!!!
We plan to have the new handbooks available at the April 9th meeting.  Last, but not least, don't forget coffee & donuts at 9 a.m. before the club meeting.  Come one, come all and enjoy!   Joe

VICE PRESIDENTIAL CORNER:

A FEW WORDS FROM OUR VP:
(paraphrased from phone chat w/ editor)
Springtime Greetings to all!  The GPDA's Annual Spring Fundraiser on March 12th was another success for the club and also lots of fun.  A good time was had by all.  Thank you to all the performers and also to all who brought the good food.  Thanks also to Troy Pulver for coordinating the event and rounding up all the nifty prizes. All in all, it was a fine evening.  The venue was great, the sound was great, and it was spacious and roomy.  I made a recording of the evenings' concert which I am in the process of cleaning up and editing right now.  Please let me know if you're interested in having a copy of this recording.

On a side note, I'd like to thank my fellow temporary band members for the night, Troy, Joy and Bob.  That was my first time on stage, as I have previously preferred and managed to stay behind the scenes.  I experienced lots of pre-performance nerves but also the post-performance euphoria (Whew, it's over.)  (Next year will be easier - JP)

Regarding the upcoming club meeting, I want to encourage everyone to attend.  I myself am considering attending the first mountain dulcimer workshop just to see what it's all about.  Plus there's a free lunch.  And you'll definitely want to stick around for Quintin's concert Sat. afternoon.  Hope to see you all there.

Chuck (the undisputed President of Vice)

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

High Priority Announcement:

Quintin Stephens Mountain Dulcimer Workshops sponsored by Great Plains Dulcimer Alliance on April 9, 2005.   This is on the regular club meeting day.    Lunch is free and the hour long mini-concert by Quintin from 2:45 to 3:45 is also free,  courtesy of Great Plains Dulcimer Alliance members.  Quintin will be doing two consecutive workshops and the cost is $5 per person per workshop.  Quintin is a fantastic player and I think you will enjoy him a lot.   Barbara Barr

We're going to try to get a jam session going for those who play instruments other than the mountain dulcimer, so bring your instruments and come jam.  You'll want to stick around for Quintin's concert anyway.

OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY AND PROMOTE THE GPDA:

As mentioned above (#8 in the minutes), the GPDA has been invited to perform for Pioneer Days at Oatville Elementary School, 4335 S. Hoover, on April 15th. This is on a Friday so those that work a real job won't be able to come probably, but there are enough of us that can go over and play.   Times: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 to 3:00 p.m..  In the morning is the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders, and the afternoon is K, 1st and 2nd grades.  They would like for us to play for the kids and maybe discuss music and  our instruments.  We could do it in two groups so it would not be such a long day for anyone.

M U S I C I A N S   W A N T E D:

We are gearing up for another big event at the Kansas Oil Museum.  Butler County Day will be Sat., June 11, from 9 to 5, at 383 E. Central, El Dorado.  If you haven't been to the Museum for this fun event, you don't know what a terrific place it is!  Lots of big shade trees, an 1860 cabin, 1930 Oil Town, vintage car and tractor show, vendors, kids games, petting zoo, and much more.

What we need is MUSIC.  That's where you come in.  We will have a stage and sound system set up or you can just sit somewhere and play for the folks walking by. Let me know if you can help out.  The crowd really appreciates the music.  If you're interested, please contact me for more details.
Thank you,
Teresa Bachman

UPCOMING FESTIVALS:

1.  Here is the website for the JAM (Jubilee of Acoustic Music) to held May 20-21.  Lots of terrific talent will be there to teach and entertain.  www.jubileeofacousticmusic.org

2. This year, The Lone Star State Dulcimer Festival will be held on May 6 - 8, at the Oakdale Park Campground in Glen Rose, TX.  This is a great festival and it's FREE.  The location is about an hour southwest of Dallas.  The Festival will feature a series of concerts and workshops by nationally known performers including Guy George, Bill Robinson, Karen Muller, Dufus, Charles Whitmer, Dana Hamilton, Sweet Song String Band, David Moran, Joe Morgan and Scott Odena.  Onsite camping is available, and superb workshops go all day long.  Website: http://users2.ev1.net/~dcturner/grfest.htm

3.  Make,  Share, and Enjoy  Music at the 24th annual Kansas State Fiddling & Picking Championships, August 21-22, 2004 in Lawrence, Kansas.  This is a smaller festival which comes highly recommended by Teresa Bachman.  She encourages us all to go and compete on our instruments of choice.  As she says it, "There is no better way to improve your playing/performance skills than to prepare for a contest.  No matter what your playing level is, you can have a great time, meet other players and be a better musician!"  Here's the festival website:  www.fidpick.org
